Festival sandals and footwear

from Renaissance Moccasins,
10666 Renfaire Dr., Plantersville, TX 77363

Let's face it, tennis shoes just don't go with ritual garb. It isn't easy to find footwear that does, in a contemporary store. Happily, there are other options. I'm familiar with this style of footwear from my own Renaissance activities.

Ann Elizabeth Rosenbaum makes stock and custom sandals and boots ideal for festival or ritual wear. (These are not, by the way, Native American styled moccasins. They're based on historic European patterns, Celtic and Roman from the looks of them.) The lowtop moccasins lace just to the ankles, with a fairly solid toe made of leather strips pursed together. The high-top moccasins have the same toe, but lace above the ankle to provide a bit more support. These will look especially good on guys. The open-toe sandals have have a low, airy construction ideal for priestesses. These also come in a high-top version for more ankle support, good if you plan to do a lot of dancing. There are also boot moccasins available, which go all the way up to the knee but are more open in the front than most boots; I didn't receive samples of these but they look terrific on the Website. The shoes I tested have a wonderful huggy feel to them, unlike anything I've found in modern footwear, and Ann assures me that her company does repair and resoling of all their shoes, so these shoes can be made to last next to forever as opposed to the usual "consume and discard" mentality of mass-market shoes.

All of these are made from thick, supple leather that will last for years and stand up to heavy use. The bottoms are reinforced with sturdy modern soles. Color choices include quite a wide range, from neutrals (black, white, various browns) to brights (blues, reds, greens) and even metallic (gold, silver, bronze). Adult and children's sizes are available, and Rosenbaum also does custom work if you don't see exactly what you want in stock, and her shoes are completely re-soleable - no throwing these out in a year!

The next time you go to a festival, you can go in style with this footwear!
